Webinar: Climate Cooling – more than a scientific question

2:00PM CET Online

Who gets to decide on cooling the planet, and how? Our researchers walk through four possible futures for SRM geopolitics and what they mean for governments facing high-stakes decisions.

How can governments prepare for high-stakes decisions on solar radiation modification (SRM) in an uncertain geopolitical future?

Join Dr Trish Lavery and Dr Danielle Young for an online discussion of practical tools and insights from the SAFEGEOGOV project, a collaboration between the Centre for Future Generations (CFG), the University of Leeds and the OECD, with support from the UK’s Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA).

We’ll explore four scenarios showing how the geopolitics around SRM may unfold by 2036 and discuss what happened when experts negotiated SRM governance under crisis conditions. The discussion will explore how policymakers – along with research funders and civil society organisations – can use these scenarios and insights to explore the implications of different futures, test governance options and assess negotiation strategies against realistic political dynamics.

We will also show how the interactive scenario explorer can help audiences beyond policy experts grapple with the complexity of SRM decision-making.

Our speakers

  • Matthias Honegger, Senior Director of CFG’s Climate Intervention Team, will introduce the session.

  • Dr Danielle N. Young, Researcher at the University of Leeds.

  • Dr Trish Lavery, Strategic Foresight Lead at CFG.

The discussion will be moderated by Rowan Emslie, CFG’s Chief Communications Officer.
