Prof. Ian Goldin

Ian explores the intersections of technology, development, and globalisation. As a member of the board of directors, Ian provides strategic insights on the governance of emerging technologies and their societal impacts.

Ian Goldin is Professor of Globalisation and Development at the University of Oxford and a Professional Fellow at Balliol College. He previously served as the founding Director of the Oxford Martin School, where he led interdisciplinary research on the future of work, development, and technological change.

From 2001 to 2006, Ian was Vice President of the World Bank and Special Representative to the United Nations, and prior to that, he served as an economic advisor to President Nelson Mandela and CEO of the Development Bank of Southern Africa. Earlier in his career, Ian held leadership roles at the OECD Development Centre and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

An accomplished author, Ian has written over 60 journal articles and 23 books, including Rescue: From Global Crisis to a Better World and The Butterfly Defect, where he predicted the global pandemic’s systemic risks. His work also includes BBC documentaries and widely acclaimed presentations at TED, the World Economic Forum, and Google Zeitgeist.

Ian holds graduate degrees from the London School of Economics and Oxford University. He has advised international organisations and Fortune 500 companies, bringing his expertise in globalisation, systemic risk, and governance to a wide range of audiences.
