Anthony has spent 30 years inside the machinery of policymaking, at the European Commission, the OECD and now the European Round Table for Industry.
Anthony Gooch Gálvez has spent 30 years at the top of international organisations, including the European Commission and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). As Secretary General of the European Round Table for Industry (ERT), which brings together the chief executives and chairs of Europe’s 60 largest industrial and technology companies, he helps steer efforts to restore Europe’s competitiveness and complete the Single Market.
Over 15 years as a Director at the OECD, he worked on some of the organisation’s biggest reform projects: the overhaul of global tax standards after the global financial crisis, and the effort to develop trustworthy, human-centric principles for artificial intelligence. He pioneered the OECD Better Life Index, which set out to measure well-being and quality of life beyond GDP. He also created the OECD Global Parliamentary Network, whose members, drawn from over 50 countries, help develop and fine-tune international standards across public policy.
His 14 years at the European Commission included co-ordinating free trade negotiations with Mexico and working as the EU’s spokesman for international trade and special adviser to Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy, helping to launch the Doha Development Round of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and bring China into the WTO. He also represented the EU in senior diplomatic roles in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Anthony holds advisory roles with EU think tanks including the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies and Re-Imagine Europa, and is an adjunct professor at IE University in Madrid. He holds an MA from the University of Cambridge and a postgraduate degree from Sciences Po Paris, and is a graduate of IESE Business School’s Advanced Management Programme. He speaks English, Spanish, French and Italian.
