Studying the design of AI governance institutions, Alex analyses what makes them effective and trustworthy. He translates insights from ML research and institutional design into policy guidance.
At CFG, Alex studies how to design effective institutions for both AI governance and research.
His work examines what organizational structures, funding mechanisms, and governance models enable institutions to succeed in their missions – whether they’re overseeing AI development or conducting frontier research themselves.
Recently, he has analyzed how different countries approach building technical expertise and governance capacity, from research institutions like CERN for AI to government bodies like AI Safety Institutes.
Before joining CFG, Alex worked as a freelance journalist and political commentator, writing about technology policy across print, radio, and TV in the UK, EU, and US.
He brings a unique perspective shaped by his experience communicating complex topics to diverse audiences. Alex holds an MEng in Discrete Mathematics from the University of Warwick, where he specialized in machine learning and computational complexity theory.
